UPPERCUT'S HISTORY

For 40 years, Uppercut Dance Theater has been creating hard-hitting shows aimed at adult, young - and youngest - audiences. The performances are a dynamic intersection of modern dance, breakdance and Theater. They allow us to find role models and bodily answers to some of life's many questions. The stories are served with a twinkle in the eye and with the raw and physical expression of the whole body.

History

Uppercut Dance Theater was founded in 1982 by Cher Geurtze and Ann Crooset. As one of the first modern companies in Denmark, Uppercut Dance Theater received public funding from the Danish Arts Council.

Uppercut Dance Theater Today

Uppercut Dance Theater is a diverse and international dance company.

Stylistically, the company offers a fresh fusion of different dance styles within contemporary dance and hip hop culture, which is illustrated through the individual dancers' different backgrounds in Capoeira, Break, physical acrobatics and contemporary. With Uppercut, the Danish dance scene has gained a whole new dimension of physical equilibrium.

Uppercut Dance Theatre's movement language challenges the common perception of modern dance. Uppercut's special style is also felt evocatively, where it constantly weaves between the dark and powerful aesthetics, and the more comic elements that suddenly arise when you are at least awaiting them.

Artistic Directors

The artistic leadership behind Uppercut Dance Theater today consists of Stephanie Thomasen and Mark Philip. Together they form the third generation of the company, and with performances such as Differences, 360°, and also CRASH, PANIC DAY and most recently SAMBA, they have developed the company towards the more mature audience alongside the traditional and important repertoire for children and young people.

The works over the recent years have resulted in several prestigious awards, nominations, grants, as well as a whole host of positive reviews from enthusiastic journalists. The performances 360° and PANIC DAY were Reumert nominated as dance performances of the year in 2015 and 2019. Stephanie Thomasen and Mark Philip have also been honored with personal nominations and grants for their contributions such as, Ballet Master Albert Gaubier's Foundation, the Neel Resling Halpern Foundation, The Spring award and the State Honorary Grant Foundation.
